The American team got off to a dominant start at the Presidents Cup in Montreal and secured a strong starting position with a clear 5-0 win in the foursomes.
Under captain Jim Furyk, the team took control early on and underlined their ambition to win their tenth title in a row.
For the third time in tournament history, the USA managed to sweep the opening four. Despite the clear result, three of the five matches went to the 18th hole. However, the international team missed several opportunities and missed birdie putts, allowing the Americans to steadily increase their lead. Xander Schauffele and debutant Tony Finau were particularly impressive in the opening match against Jason Day and Byeong Hun An and scored the first point for the USA.
Unsportsmanlike conduct by Kim and Sungjae
There was particular tension in the match between Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim. Although both are friends off the pitch, they had a heated duel. Kim cheered loudly with a “Let’s go!” after a long birdie putt, while Scheffler countered with a putt of his own. On the eighth hole, Kim and his playing partner Sungjae Im were noticed for unsportsmanlike behavior when they left the course before Scheffler had finished his putt.
After the first day, Team USA is 5-0. A special moment for Scheffler, who scored his first point in the Presidents Cup after losing all matches on his debut in 2022.
