Crowd favorite Jannik Sinner underlined his title ambitions at the ATP Finals with a perfect group phase and knocked former champion Daniil Medvedev out of the tournament.
In the new edition of the Australian Open final, the Italian world number one won 6:3, 6:4 without much effort and celebrated his third victory in the third game in front of his home crowd. Due to Medvedev’s defeat, the American Taylor Fritz moved into the semi-finals alongside Sinner.
As group winner, Sinner could avoid Germany number one Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals, who won the other group before his showdown against Spanish exceptional Carlos Alcaraz on Friday (2 p.m. live and exclusively on Sky Tennis) states. Due to his eighth defeat in the last nine duels with Sinner, the Russian world number four Medvedev missed his fourth place in the semi-finals at the end of the year for the best eight tennis professionals.
Medvedev has not won a tournament for the first time since 2017
Tour dominator Sinner was in top form on Thursday, as he was in his first two duels in Turin, and played almost flawlessly apart from a short phase in the second set. The 23-year-old, who is still facing a doping ban, secured both major titles on hard courts this year (Melbourne and New York) and is aiming for the perfect end to the year.
