While Alexander Zverev is basically already in the semifinals at the ATP Finals, Carlos Alcaraz is not only fighting to advance, but also with health problems.
Alexander Zverev pushes aside the memory of that bitter June 9th in Roland Garros before meeting Carlos Alcaraz again. “It’s been six months, a lot has happened. We’re now here at the ATP Finals. The last tournament of the year. I just want to give it my all,” said Germany’s tennis star after his second group win in Turin.
The defeat in the final of the French Open still hangs over the German number one a little; the 27-year-old was only one set away from winning the Grand Slam title he longed for against Spain’s exceptional talent before Alcaraz turned the match around. On Friday (2 p.m. LIVE on Sky) Zverev will now have the chance for a little revenge in the fight for the semi-finals at the season finale – and is preparing for major resistance despite the Wimbledon champion’s health problems.
Alcaraz (almost) doomed to win
“He played a great match today. I expect the same,” said Zverev about Alcaraz, who returned to the tournament with a two-set win over Andrey Rublev – but is almost doomed to win against Zverev for his chance of reaching the semi-finals.

He coughed, he was visibly gasping for air at times and still he won: Carlos Alcaraz keeps his chance of reaching the semi-finals at the ATP Finals. The ailing Spaniard defeated Andrey Rublev 6:3 and 7:6.
The opposite does not apply to hamburgers. After the high-class 7:6 (7:3), 6:3 win against Norwegian Casper Ruud, Zverev is very close to making it to the semi-finals with two wins from two games. Zverev can only be denied participation in the semi-finals if he loses against Alcaraz and Ruud wins (against Rublev) in a complicated three-way comparison.

Alexander Zverev seems to be in the form of his life just in time for the ATP Finals. In his second game too, the German gave his opponent, in this case Casper Ruud, no chance. In the end, Zverev won 7:6 and 6:3.
The in-form Olympic champion in Tokyo doesn’t want to let it get that far; he is aiming for his third title in the season finale of the best eight tennis professionals in the Italian metropolis after 2018 and 2021. It would be a conciliatory end to the year – even if the memory of the bitter defeat in Paris will remain.
