Second division football team Hamburger SV has separated from coach Steffen Baumgart. The club announced this one day after the 2-2 draw against FC Schalke 04, in which HSV had lost a 2-0 lead. Assistant coach Merlin Polzin will take over the team on an interim basis.

Kuntz: Don’t take on the coaching job

HSV sports director Stefan Kuntz left it open on Sunday afternoon who would be the new coach. Just this much: He himself will not exchange his position as sports director for the role of coach. “I will definitely not become a coach,” said the 62-year-old on “Bild” Live.

Kuntz did not want to comment on other rumors. The TV channel “Sky” brought former HSV professional Ruud van Nistelrooy, who most recently looked after Manchester United as interim coach, into the game. “Bild” named Lukas Kwasniok from league rivals SC Paderborn and former HSV coach Bruno Labbadia as potential candidates. Labbadia is good friends with Kuntz.

HSV without a win in four games in a row

Hamburger SV has not won four league games in a row – and Baumgart has come under increasing criticism.

After impressive performances against Paderborn (2:2), Düsseldorf (3:0) and Magdeburg (3:1), Hamburg suffered some slumps that were difficult to explain. In Elversberg the team suffered a 2:4 defeat, while HSV lost 1:3 to relegation candidate Eintracht Braunschweig.

:1:3 in Braunschweig: November blues at HSV

Hamburger SV loses promotion at the end of the season – we know that. It’s surprising that things got stuck on the eleventh matchday this time. The 1:3 against Braunschweig leaves you at a loss.

Baumgart himself is said to have taken the decision calmly. “It was an exciting and very intense time. I remain connected to the club and hope that HSV achieves its goals,” said the 52-year-old. His assistants Rene Wagner and Kevin McKenna also have to leave.

Baumgart was only in office for nine months

After the draw against Schalke, which the fans acknowledged with whistles, the sporting leadership around sports director Stefan Kuntz had apparently had enough.

“Steffen gave everything for HSV with great passion, energy and commitment right up to the end. Our analysis of the current situation and yesterday’s game made it clear once again that we believe a new impulse is necessary to get out of the performance and results crisis.” Kuntz was quoted as saying.
