The German tennis women missed the quarter-finals of the final round of the Billie Jean King Cup in Malaga.
Captain Rainer Schüttler’s team lost 2-0 to Great Britain in the round of 16. Dortmund’s Jule Niemeier lost the first game against former US Open winner Emma Raducanu 4:6, 4:6. Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) then lost to Katie Boulter 1:6, 2:6. In the round of the last eight, the British will now face defending champions Canada.
In the first set, Niemeier received the decisive break at 3:4 and was no longer able to turn the round around. In the second set she lost four more service games, breaking Raducanu’s serve twice herself. Ultimately, Niemeier had to admit defeat after the sixth match point and 1:55 hours. Siegemund had a bad day and never really got into the game. For them it was over after just 70 minutes.
Missed first quarterfinal since 2019
The German team wanted to reach the quarterfinals of the competition, which was once called the Fed Cup, for the first time since 2019. Due to the defeat, Niemeier and Co. missed Germany’s 100th victory over Great Britain. A selection from the German Tennis Federation (DTB) has won the trophy twice in history – in 1987 and 1992 with Steffi Graf.
Schüttler’s team, which includes Niemeier, Siegemund, Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau), Anna-Lena Friedsam (Neuwied) and future hope Eva Lys (Hamburg), went into the game against Great Britain as underdogs.
