Mario Götze shot Eintracht Frankfurt to second place in the Bundesliga in his 100th competitive game for the Hesse team. The 2014 world champion scored the winning goal in the 45th minute in the 1-0 (1-0) draw against Werder Bremen and ensured that Eintracht is now FC Bayern Munich’s first pursuer. The gap to the German record champions is six points.

Fifth win in a row for Frankfurt

It was also the fifth competitive win in a row for Frankfurt. Werder, on the other hand, remains in the midfield of the league.

“I expect a goal from him,” Eintracht coach Dino Toppmöller said about Götze before the game – although he didn’t mean it entirely seriously. Götze still complied with his coach’s demands and also gave Toppmöller a birthday present with the goal. The coach turned 44 on Saturday.

On the pitch, in front of 58,000 spectators, Eintracht initially tried to take the momentum from the last four competitive games with them. The SGE took control of the game from the start and also appeared more determined. High-flyer Omar Marmoush, who scored eleven goals in the first ten match days, shot over the Werder goal from distance (4th). Otherwise, the Egyptian remained largely pale this time.

Bremen lacks precision in the final pass

A short time later, Bremen keeper Michael Zetterer was just able to fend off a pass from Götze in the penalty area with his foot (6th). In a balanced game, Werder held up well and repeatedly came up with dangerous offensive moves. However, the guests mostly lacked precision in the final pass. Bremen’s best opportunity in the first half was Marco Grüll, who missed the target with a volley (39′).

Things got better shortly before half-time after a fine Eintracht move by Götze, who scored his eighth Bundesliga goal against Werder. The veteran has not scored so often against any other club.

Medical emergency on the block

The Frankfurt supporters in the northwest curve had stopped their support at this point. There had been a medical emergency in the stands.

“We sincerely hope that nothing worse has happened,” said Eintracht on the X platform. The affected person was transported away and appears to be stable, it said.

Stark only hits the post

After the break, the SGE fans supported their team again as usual. Both teams continued to meet on equal terms in the second half, but did not initially create any compelling chances.

The game was bubbling along until Mitchell Weiser’s header from close range was denied by Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (75′). Werder’s Niklas Stark had the greatest opportunity, hitting the post after a corner in the 80th minute.
